Effective use of incinerated ash of paper sludge (PS ash)

Paper sludge (PS), a byproduct in the paper making process, is being used as fuel in our in-house power generation system. While a portion of this incinerated ash is being used effectively, the majority of it is being disposed of as industrial waste. Controlling its production and using it effectively are major issues faced by paper making companies.

Since April 2011, Marusumi Paper Company has been taking part in collaborative research with Ehime University on uses of PS ash. Based on results gained through this research, we have succeeded in developing interlocking blocks using the PS ash.

Together with Ehime University, we have made composition adjustments to the block containing PS ash, and created a PS block in which one-third consists of PS ash in place of cement. These blocks were used for the first time for a city-run parking lot in its pavement work carried out jointly with Shikokuchuo City. A ceremony to commemorate its completion was held on January 21, 2016.

We will continue to engage in further efforts to stay aligned with our management philosophy, “We strive to protect our global environment.”
